Fairmount Water Works And Reservoir – Philadelphia

This is an 1866 Currier and Ives print showing both sides fo the Schuylkill River. The reservoir illustrated on the East Bank of the river is the present day location of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Located on high ground above the river, the area was called Faire Mount, and was a popular 19th century gathering place.

There were many industries on both sides fo the river. The Baldwin Locomotive Works was situated on the West Bank, near the present day location of the 30th Street Station. The Cold Spring Ice Company was located directly across from the Water Works. The area was also an important food distribution depot for the city, with agricultural products coming in by train from Lancaster County.
