Silk Mill – Pottsville

Established in 1887 by Albert Tilt and Jos. Congdon of Phoenix Silk Co. This is one example of the various types of mills that existed along the Schuylkill River. Pennsylvania had a silk industry, fostered by Benjamin Franklin, but it never grew into a significant industry in the United States. However, due to the availability of labor and resources, many communities had their own silk and textile mills until the arrival of foreign competitors.
